EDGE Quincy Roche

Quincy Roche was a much bigger name entering the 2021 NFL Draft, but he hasn’t stood out quite as much as Mark Gilbert so far at Steelers training camp. This could just be because almost every pass rusher has gotten the best of the offensive linemen they’ve gone up against this year – making it harder for one particular player to stand out (unless, of course, you’re Alex Highsmith).

Still, there is a lot to love about Roche. Because of his elite college production at both Temple and Miami, many thought Roche would be a 3rd or 4th round draft choice this year; yet the Steelers were able to land him with their 6th round pick. Early in training camp, Roche has made some splash plays and has gotten to the quarterback in team sessions.

Admittedly, the rookie edge defender has been quiet at times during training camp, and veteran Cassius Marsh has been the more consistent player overall. However, after reviewing film from the Hall of Fame Game, I thought Roche outplayed Marsh.

If it’s even close, the Steelers need to go with Roche here. At 23 years old, Pittsburgh has him under an extremely cheap contract for the next four years. Even if he only ever becomes a rotational role player on defense and special teamer, it beats the alternative of keeping the unspectacular, 29-year-old Marsh on a one-year deal.
