Benny Snell Jr., Running back

Benny Snell Jr. is probably a surprise on this list as the fourth-round pick from two years ago is having problems. He has been sidelined with an injury for the majority of training camp and that is a major flaw right now. His absence has given Anthony McFarland Jr. and Kalen Ballage added reps in practices and games. McFarland has had a nice camp thus far and it seems like he could earn that second-string role with some playing time for this offense. Snell does add a short-yardage element to his game but the player has struggled to break tackles in the NFL. He is a tough runner and not being able to break through tackles is a major issue at this level.

It would still be difficult for him to not make this team but Ballage has been taking advantage of his added reps. This is a journeyman that just needs to find the right spot. He is also a big running back just like Snell is. The benefit Snell brings with him is youth and that is a big boost when you are looking at constructing a roster. Ballage is a veteran that has some decent NFL experience and should get a job, either in Pittsburgh or elsewhere. Snell’s injury has become a major issue since he has not proven much with his starting snaps and needs to prove himself again in the pre-season. He has yet to do that and it could affect his chances of making the final roster.

The Steelers will make some interesting decisions when the final cuts come in. These players need to rise above their competition if they want to be on this final roster.
