Steelers 53-man roster prediction: Post-preseason game vs Eagles
By Tyler Jaggi
Steelers Safeties (4)
Minkah Fitzpatrick, Terrell Edmunds, Miles Killebrew, Tre Norwood
Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds will resume their roles as starters from last year. Edmunds is entering the final year of his rookie season, so there is a real chance that they look to get another strong safety more involved if Edmunds doesn’t take another step forward. Steelers could look at the waiver wire after the final cuts so improve this position. Steelers are in need of a developmental “project” safety to take over the role of Edmunds next season, which could be a 2022 draft pick (although Steelers are starting to lack draft capital after their recent trades).
Miles Killebrew and Tre Norwood are more of the special teamers than true backups you’d want on the fields on gameday. I don’t see Pittsburgh carrying more than 4 players at this position. What they can’t afford is an injury to Minkah Fitzpatrick could completely wreck how this defense works (much like T.J. Watt).
Steelers Special Teams (3)
Chris Boswell, Pressley Harvin, Kameron Canaday
Chris Boswell has been one of the better place kickers over the last few seasons. The Steelers did use a seventh-round pick on Harvin, so until some actual tape between the two comes up, he gets the early nod. Just don’t lock him into the roster yet, as being a drafted specialist doesn’t mean you are promised a roster spot. As for the rest of the unit, Kameron Canaday will be the long snapper and that will be the Steelers three special team unit.
