CB Mark Gilbert

Of the players who I consider to be on the roster bubble this year, Mark Gilbert might be the one I hope makes the team the most. While Gilbert is still widely unknown to many Steelers fans, he has looked very good this summer and the young cornerback has impressive upside.

As a sophomore at Duke, Gilbert compiled 6 interceptions in just 13 games, according to Sports Reference. Unfortunately, he played in just 4 contests over the next 3 seasons. Now the undrafted rookie is finally healthy and it shows. Had he continued on the path he was trending prior to his injuries in college, he could have been a day-two pick in the NFL Draft.

Gilbert has flashed at training camp this summer and has had a few impressive pass breakups. His sticky coverage has been on display at times during the preseason as well.

Unfortunately for him, Gilbert could be on the outside looking in, as the team has more depth currently at outside cornerback than nickel defenders. Because the team is likely to keep only six cornerbacks, this could come down to a contest between him and Arthur Maulet. However, Maulet seems much more likely to make the team at this point. The Steelers can probably get Gilbert back on the practice squad (which is what will likely happen), but I think he’s played well enough to earn a roster spot in 2021.
