If you ask me, Carlos Davis has been more impressive than Isaiah Buggs during training camp, and the Steelers probably don’t need both. Davis and Buggs are both defensive tackles listed on the depth chart behind Tyson Alualu; however, they essentially offer the same thing on defense.

The biggest difference between the two is that Davis is significantly more athletic, and it shows. During OL vs DL drills at Steelers training camp, Davis has been quite impressive with his reps – consistently winning with speed and agility against less athletic offensive linemen.

In addition to his quickness and burst off the ball, Davis is also a solid special teams player, and the Steelers have even been using him on kick coverage during the preseason. This is incredibly rare to see from a 320-pound defensive tackle, but it’s even rarer for someone his size to possess blazing 4.82 speed.

Davis has flashed this summer for the Steelers and I think he’s done enough to stick around on the roster for another year. It will be interesting to see if Pittsburgh keeps him on the 53-man roster this year.

There are other young players on the bubble I can make a case for, but I think these three players have outperformed expectations this summer and deserve to be on the final roster.
