DB Arthur Maulet

With Antoine Brooks now out of the picture in 2021, Arthur Maulet could compete for an increased role in defensive sub-packages this year, but that doesn’t necessarily make him the best man for the job.

Most predict that Cam Sutton will kick inside in nickel and dime defensive looks, but Maulet could also be the beneficiary of one of the weakest positions on the team. Maulet has been around the league for a little while now, but what we saw from him as a member of the Jets last year was just so-so.

Like Mike Hilton, Maulet is undersized but is solid when it comes to his ability to pursue the run and throw his body into the mix. Unfortunately, he offers sub-par ability in coverage and isn’t a very good athlete with respect to his position.

The combination of all of these things could have the Steelers looking for a new nickel/dime defensive back after final cuts are made or perhaps even trade for one. If Maulet is going to play get involved on defense this year, we need to see more from him against the Panthers.

The Steelers still have plenty of positions that need to be figured out before final cuts are made and there seem to be a few spots at the bottom of the roster that could be up for grabs. Keep an eye on these five players as Pittsburgh takes on Carolina in the final preseason game of 2021.
