4 takeaways from Steelers embarrassing preseason loss vs Panthers

Jamir Jones may have played his way onto a Steelers roster spot
Most fans probably didn’t even know the name Jamir Jones prior to this summer, as the former 2020 undrafted free agent was projected to be just another camp body. However, Jones has been far more than that for the Steelers over the past several weeks.
After turning heads at training camp, Jones took his game to another level during the NFL preseason. In part-time action over his last two preseason games, Jones has compiled 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 tackle for a loss, and a whopping 4 quarterback hits.
Whether it is on special teams or on defense, Jamir Jones has been all over the field for the Steelers in August, and he clearly wasn’t going away without a fight.
This forces Pittsburgh into a very difficult decision. Three edge defenders are already a lock to make the team in T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Melvin Ingram, while I still think they really like Cassius Marsh as for his special teams value. Jones has outplayed rookie Quincy Roche, but will the team be willing to spend an extra roster spot on an edge defender this year? We will find out soon.
Things were far from perfect for the Steelers in the preseason finale against the Panthers, but this is to be expected when the starters sat this contest out. What’s more important than anything is that the team escaped training camp and the preseason without any major injuries. Let’s hope they are well prepared when they face the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.
