Kendrick Green, center

To be honest, I can’t even guarantee that Kendrick Green is going to be the Week 1 starter for the Steelers at center this year. Pittsburgh’s most recent depth chart actually contradicts this – listing veteran J.C. Hassenauer as the starter on the post-53-man roster depth chart.

Still, we have ample reason to believe that the nod is actually going to go to the rookie, considering Green took almost exclusively first-team snaps at center during the back half of training camp and the NFL preseason. But just because Green could be starting doesn’t give us a lot of reason for confidence.

Though he’s a much better athlete than Hassenauer (who has been rather unspectacular when called upon) Green still has plenty of things he needs to work on and issues I would have liked to see him resolve before the start of the season. Green has no issues getting out in space moving defenders in the run game. However, his technique has gotten sloppy at times this summer and he was continually bullied in pass sets against stronger defensive linemen who could walk him back into the pocket.

I hope that Kendrick Green gets the start for the Steelers, as he still has immense upside and I think he’s the better option. However, I need to see a lot more consistency in his game.
