Steelers Pierre gets an interception

A young Steeler who has had some growing pains so far in 2021, James Pierre should still be a featured player on the defense this week. His play has been more of a throwback to the team’s corners from before: allow the catch but make the tackle. He has been successful in that role, only missing one tackle so far and having two passes defended to his credit.

He struggled when covering Ja’Marr Chase deep, but frankly, most corners would have struggled with that play. Pierre could have been in a better position, yes, but Joe Burrow had a great pass and Chase made a strong catch. This week, Pierre will likely be facing off against Allen Lazard — playing opposite of Adams with Marques Valdes-Scantling out. I think that is a matchup Pierre could exploit.

Add in the fact that the Steelers defense has been devoid of interceptions (Terrell Edmunds has the only one so far) and I think Pierre is due for one. He makes up for his touchdown given up last week, by snagging an interception on a deep pass intended for Lazard. No, he isn’t perfect, but for a developing corner, Pierre looks solid against one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
