3 moves Steelers need to make, regardless of how the 2021 season ends
Steelers must draft a quarterback in 2022
Unless the Steelers go a bit crazy and pursue Aaron Rodgers, the most feasible way to address this need is in the draft and should be their first selection in 2022. The Steelers’ draft position ultimately determines who they are able to select with that all-important first pic. Then beyond that, it depends on which quarterbacks rise and which ones fall in the ratings by April of next year.
There are several they can choose from Sam Howell or Carson Strong if they want a prototypical quarterback. Or if they wish to have one a bit more mobile, there is Kedon Slovis of USC or Malik Willis from Liberty. If you go by who sits at the top of the ratings, you have Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma, and some analysts or fans seem to like Matt Corral of Ole Miss.
If none of those fit the bill, there is Tyler Shough of Texas Tech, Desmond Ridder of Cincinnati, or Jayden Daniels of Arizona. Whoever is selected needs to be the right one to fit the Steelers’ offense.
If the Steelers end up centering on a quarterback with their first pick, views will certainly vary as to who they should take, at least through March. By then, we will have insight as to who the Steelers could be leaning towards selecting. In any event, this should be the number one move on their list after the season ends.
Take care of that with their first pick; they can have a quality free agent on the offensive line to open the running lanes or to protect the quarterback even if Ben Roethlisberger chooses to stay for another season or two.
If the Steelers do these things, they should compete from a much stronger position in the 2022 NFL season.
