Steelers offensive line is improving fast
Outside of maybe just Ben Roethlisberger, the offensive line has been the biggest question mark on this team early in the season. After a dismal first three games in which they failed to protect their quarterback or carve out any running room on the ground, they have since taken some big steps forward.
Pittsburgh’s offensive line took a surprisingly big step up last week against the Packers, and they continued to trend in the right direction vs the Broncos in Week 5. Ben Roethlisberger was rarely hit in this contest and the line proved to provide ample time for the quarterback to scan the field.
As a result, Roethlisberger finished the game passing for over 10 yards per attempt — a more impressive number than he has seen in a long time. Additionally, Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson had extremely efficient games — each averaging over 25 yard per reception and pulling in a touchdown.
Perhaps the biggest difference with this offensive line was their improvement run blocking. Dan Moore and Kevin Dotson helped spring some massive holes for Najee Harris to run through. By the end of the game, the rookie running back had earned 122 rushing yards on 23 carries (5.3 yards per attempt). Even Benny Snell was able to average 4.0 yards per carry with good blocking.
