Matt Canada needs to help the offensive line more
There are things an offensive coordinator can do to help keep the quarterback clean and to get more push in the run game despite a below-average o-line. For starters, the Steelers need to get 2 tight end sets more involved. For one adding extra heft will help seal the edge even at the expense of an extra playmaker on the outside. The other reason is more for the passing game.
If the Steelers utilize their tight ends and running backs to chip pass rushers at the start of their routes it would buy Big Ben more time. With the amount of short passes Ben has been throwing anyways why not buy him an extra half-second in case someone downfield comes open. If we know that Ben will probably check it down anyways, why not give him an extra second to set his feet.
The Steelers have two very talented pass catchers in the TE room between Eric Ebron and Pat Freiermuth. While Ebron is known for his inability to block and propensity for drops chipping is significantly easier than maintaining a block.
Furthermore, the combination of the two will be sure to generate mismatches all over the field. Sending both to the flat after chipping a rusher on their way would be sure to open the middle of the field while both have the athleticism needed to make defenses pay if they leave them open in the flat.
All in all the offensive line needs help. While the Steelers shouldn’t sell house to improve the whole group, there are some players they should target, and schemes they can implement to help keep Ben clean and to give Najee Harris more room to work with.
