1. Jimmy Garoppolo

The top option for the Steelers if they are to look into acquiring a veteran quarterback is Jimmy Garoppolo. At 29 years old Garoppolo still has plenty left in the tank, but with the 49ers moving up in the draft to select Trey Lance, his time in San Francisco is clearly up after this season.

Garoppolo is 26-10 in his career as a starter, and has plenty of playoff experience, after leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2019, before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs. He has thrown for 8,967 yards in his career while throwing 56 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

He spent the beginning of his career under the tutelage of Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and Josh McDaniels, which has helped him grow as a passer. Garoppolo presents the top option for the Steelers because he comes without the expense that trading for Rodgers would cost while being a much more proven commodity than any of the other three options on this list.

Since the 49ers have very little leverage in trade talks with it being evident Lance is their future, the Steelers may be able to acquire him without trading away a first-round selection this season, which would allow them to provide more protection for Garoppolo and Najee Harris. It’s unknown what a trade for him would require, but if the Steelers could get Garoppolo without trading this year’s first-round pick they should absolutely look into it. This would keep them in their win-now window, while also getting a quarterback with plenty left in the tank.

Whether it is in the draft, via trade, or via free agency the Steelers must address the quarterback position. With Roethlisberger likely retiring after this season, and both Rudolph and Haskins not profiling as their franchise quarterback, it’s clear the Steelers must go outside their current organization to improve the position.
