Steelers Casey Hampton

Odds of making it: 5 percent

One of the unsung heroes of the Steelers Super Bowl defenses in the mid-2000’s, Casey Hampton sees his name again make the initial list of Hall of Fame hopefuls. One of the best run-stoppers in the game, Hampton was a key figure in taking up space and allowing the rest of the defense space to make plays. It wasn’t a glamorous job, but one that he did with little complaint and with a lot of success.

Unfortunately, that kind of work leads to little recognition and mediocre stats. While a five-time pro-bowl player, Hampton only has nine career sacks to his name and less than 400 total tackles. He never got an all-pro nod either, a further detriment to his cause. He did his job well, and that’s arguably the reason that his stats are as low as they were. The Steelers needed Hampton to take up blockers so the linebackers could make plays, and that is exactly the role he had on the team.

Looking at his main competition as a nose tackle, Vince Wilfork, I think you have to favor his chances over Hamptons. While Wilfork himself is a long shot, he has two all-pros attached to his name and has better overall stats. While the Hall of Fame will likely look elsewhere altogether for a worthy defensive lineman, Hampton seemingly would be behind Wilfork as of now. Hampton was a key player for the Steelers’ defense, but his odds of being immortalized don’t seem great.
