LB Roquan Smith

Pittsburgh’s starters at inside linebackers are very solid but there is very little depth and not so much experience at the position. Roquan Smith would provide that experience and give a little bit of depth to the position. Smith’s athleticism is what would attract the Steelers to him because Pittsburgh loves athletic linebackers, I mean who doesn’t. He is fast but not blazing speed, is a tackle machine, gets interceptions, and can get into the offensive backfield and blow up plays. Roquan resembles Joe Schobert in the way of tackling.

Although they are 2 years apart in NFL experience, the two share a similar total amount of tackles per year. What makes him different from Schobert is he can get into the backfield more often, with more TFLs and more sacks. Roquan also has eyes for the football and causes turnovers through the air.

Smith is almost like a combination of Devin Bush and Joe Schobert and that would be very cool to have on your defense. It would be hard to find a way to include the 24-year old in the defense because the coaches would have to decide either who gets benched between Bush and Schobert or who gets less playing time.

The idea for putting Smith in for certain situations is always an option though. Ultimately it would be a good problem to have and the Steelers would strengthen their inside linebacking core while bringing in another young player.
