Steelers: 3 reasons why the Bears game was closer than it should have been
2. Steelers defense let Justin Fields use his legs
Prior to Monday’s game, I wrote that one of the keys to victory would be limiting Justin Fields rushing. Pittsburgh’s defense did a solid job containing him on the ground, limiting him to 45 yards on eight carries, but they struggled with his mobility when defending the pass.
Most of the damage that Fields did with his legs wasn’t on designed runs, but either scrambling for gains on pass plays or extending the play with his legs before finding a receiver. The latter was the case on the Bears most pivotal play when Fields broke the pocket, rolled to his left and found a receiver for a touchdown to put Chicago up late.
That nearly cost Pittsburgh the game, and moving forward, the Steelers will have to execute a better game plan moving forward to further limit mobile quarterbacks. With a number of them left on the roster, including two games against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens who lead the division, Pittsburgh must stop plays like his from happening.
