Steelers potential quarterback draft choices in the 2022 NFL Draft
Kedon Slovis, USC
Of all the potential quarterbacks eligible in 2022, Kedon Slovis, at this point, seems to be the most likely quarterback to be available when the Steelers draft. Of course, as a first-round draft choice, he is marginal at this point; he could go in the first or drop to the second. Leaving some to postulate if he does go in the first round, it will be in the latter choices. Right where the Steelers could be drafting.
He is slightly larger at 6’3” at 215lbs than Howell and size-wise closer to Big Ben. He has excellent leadership qualities, and a trait you want in your field general. Also, another positive is that he can scan the field with urgency and make ideal decisions based on what he sees in the defense. He can feel the pocket pressure and find ways to extend the play with his arm or legs. Sound Familiar? Like the quarterback, he is replacing? Finally, he has great ball placement on his throws.
If he has negatives, it’s the timing of his releases, and it is such that his defenses tend to bat down his passes at the line of scrimmage. Also, this issue allows defenses to read plays too easily, allowing them to break up the play or intercept the ball potentially. Finally, his arm strength has a bit to be desired, and he can not always get enough mustard on the ball, so to speak.
We really won’t know whether Slovis is the best candidate to take over for Big Ben at least until the end of the 2021 football season; however, he might be the most likely candidate in the mix as the Steelers quarterback draftee should they select one. He could have a promising career with the Steelers if selected.
