Malik Willis, Liberty

Willis is another potential target for the Steelers to consider in 2022 with their 1st round pick. It’s a little unclear what to make of his draft prospects, though. Some have him as a borderline first-round draft choice, and others like Vinnie Iyer, a writer for the sporting news who claims he will be the Trey Lance of the 2022 draft. That’s kind of a broad spectrum.

First, Willis is considered a dual threat. He can kill you with the pass or burn you with his legs. So in that sense, he could be the next Lamar Jackson. At 6’1”, Willis is smaller than even Jackson, who is 6’2”. What does seem impressive besides his ability to pass or run is he hangs tough in the pocket and can take a hit. If he chooses to run, defenders have a hard time bringing him down. So despite the lack of size, he has talent and grit. As far as his arm, many say it’s a cannon and can get the ball into tight spaces. He could bring a lot of excitement to the Steelers’ offense.

Now for the skinny. He makes a lot of bad throws, which leads one to question his decision-making process. Sometimes he tries to squeeze the ball into too small windows or by throwing into double coverage. Also, he does have some lousy accuracy on passes in which there is little to no pressure on the quarterback.

Possibly Willis could be on the Steelers’ radar as a potential quarterback draft choice. He would be a nice fit, especially to counter the Ravens in having a dual-threat quarterback. We will have to wait and see how the remainder of his college career pans out, though. He will undoubtedly be a player to watch, though.
