Grading each starter on Steelers offensive line during the 2021 season
Grading Steelers offensive line as a unit
If you think about the overall image of the Steelers 2021 offensive line, as a unit, it is constantly collapsing pockets and running backs slamming into their own blockers who are being driven back into them. In recent games, the Steelers have had some success running between the tackles.
However, of Najee Harris’ 779 yards a large part, 339 yards, have come after contact. In pass protection, the only thing keeping the Steelers from leading the league in sacks allowed is Matt Canada’s ultra-fast pass game and misdirection.

Calling The Ghost of Chuck Noll
As to whether or not anybody or thing is salvageable with this offensive line I was looking for the words for what might be said to and about the current O-Line when, to my surprise, the ghost of the great Chuck Noll tapped me on the shoulder.
As remembered by Steelers Hall of Fame linebacker, Andy Russell:
“Look, I’ve been watching the game films since I took the job. And I can tell you guys that the reason you’ve been losing is not because of your attitude or your psyche or any of that stuff. The problem is you’re just not good enough.
You know, you can’t run fast enough, you can’t jump high enough, you’re not quick enough. Your techniques are just abysmal. I’m probably going to have to get rid of most of you…and we’re going to move on.”
The Steelers will need to do something big about the offensive line. Matt Canada’s offense can’t operate with the current personnel. No offense can. While Trai Turner and Kevin Dotson may give them something to build around none of the current starters should go unchallenged.
If they don’t bring in serious competition the team will be unable to attract marquee talent at quarterback if Ben Roethlisberger decides to retire, next year. They need to go heavy on the O-Line in the Draft and look into bringing in some starting quality free agents.
