Steelers mock draft: Pittsburgh takes an interesting route on day two
By Tommy Jaggi
Steelers fifth-round pick (comp.): CB Chamarri Conner
To be quite honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers dip their feet in the pool at the cornerback position as early as the first round this April. As much as fans cringe when Pittsburgh spends draft capital on a cornerback, they are starting to see the results of not having any competent players at the position.
With Joe Haden injured for a stretch this year, the team was forced to turn to backups James Pierre and Ahkello Witherspoon. Neither of which seems to have the makings of a long-term number one option at the position. Likewise, Justin Layne has been a failed experiment.
Burning a fifth-round pick in another attempt to find a future starting cornerback is something the Steelers will be open to doing here, and Chamarri Conner has some tools that could make him a quality player at the next level.
While Conner has spent much of his time covering the slot for the Hokies, I don’t view this as a negative. In fact, it could help him get on the field sooner in the NFL. And at 6’0”, 205 lbs, Conner has the size to wear multiple hats for Pittsburgh’s defense.
