Cornerback

The cornerback position entered this season as a need for the team, with Mike Hilton and Stephen Nelson leaving. While some of this team’s young players have impressed this year, the team will need to add to the unit before next season.

Joe Haden is likely to leave as a free agent this offseason after he and the team couldn’t agree on an extension before the season. Assuming Haden leaves, the team has Cameron Sutton, James Pierre, and Tre Norwood as the definites on next year’s roster. Another potential player who could return to the fold is Ahkello Witherspoon who could parlay his improved play late in the season into a new contract with the team if that improved play continues.

While the team could spend a draft selection on a cornerback, the loss of Haden combined with the youth in the team’s cornerback room makes signing a veteran the most logical move. Some potential options slated to be available in free agency this offseason include: Kyle Fuller,  Bryce Callahan, Darious Williams, Kevin King, Charvarious Ward, and many others.

ANy of these players could be a potential signing for the Steelers. While other free agents like J.C. Jackson and Stephon Gilmore are available, they will both command top dollar, and that is something the Steelers likely won’t commit to.
