Steelers second-round pick: QB Carson Strong, Nevada

With the run on Quarterbacks in 2021, the Steelers’ gamble of selecting Cross pays off as quarterbacks are still available when they select in the second round.

There has been much speculation that the Steelers want Kenny Pickett. However, Pickett was off the board in this draft when the Steelers selected; thus, the Steelers opted for Cross. However, without all the interest in quarterbacks, as the case was in 2021 when the Steelers selection came up in the second round, one of their potential quarterback choices was still available.  We are talking Nevada’s Carson Strong.

Given the apparent lack of depth in the 2022 quarterback draft class taking Strong in the first round wouldn’t make sense from a monetary standpoint, considering he was still available in the second round. He may or may not be the future as their signal-caller; however, they can fill the gap for the short term. If he pans out, then so much the better. If not, his selection allows the Steelers to bide their time and readdress the situation within the next four seasons.

The positive with Carson is comparative he’s probably the most prototypical quarterback in the draft and has a strong arm. However, he’s not the most mobile quarterback in the draft. Size-wise he’s comparable to Big Ben.   It will be interesting to see how he develops.
