Steelers fourth-round pick (comp): WR Tre Turner WR, Virginia Tech

With their 4th selection, the Steelers decide to address the gaps at the wide receiver position considering JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington have moved on from the Steelers. Like quarterbacks, the depth of the wide receivers is not overly impressive either. That is why the Steelers waited until the 4th round to opt for another wide receiver.

Turner decided to come out as a Jr. after having a decent 2021 season. He finished with 40 receptions for 675 yards for three touchdowns.  Turner has decent size and is 6’2” 187 pounds. With his height, he has good athleticism to go with that. Add to that, Turner has a long wingspan as well. He is not prone to dropping a pass either, which is a criticism of many of the Steelers’ receivers over the last two seasons. He impressed scouts with his ability to get separation past twenty yards.

Another reason he proved attractive to the Steelers is that Virginia Tech used him in Jet sweeps and screen passes. Plays Matt Canada uses in his offensive scheme quite often.  Why not? He has 4.45 speed.

His downside he’s inconsistent in getting open downfield, something which is not any easier in the NFL. This inconsistency stems from the fact he has a poor release at the line of scrimmage. All of that said, he would be playing with big playmakers like Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson, who will draw a lot of double teams, thus giving Turner better options at getting open. He certainly offers options to whoever plays quarterback throughout the season.
