Steelers could trade Tuitt
One of the hardest things to do this year is to figure out what to do with Stephon Tuitt this offseason. Coming off a career year in 2020, Tuitt suffered the tragic loss of his brother and dealt with a foot injury that has cost him this entire season. With a sizable cap hit and a contract that is close to expiring, the Steelers will have a hard decision to make with Tuitt in 2022.
I’ll say up front that if the Steelers think that Tuitt will still be effective within two years I would keep him, as he and Cameron Heyward make up one of the fiercest defensive lines in the league. If the opposite is true, or if the team really wants to reconstruct the roster, then keeping Tuitt around makes little sense. The cap savings aren’t immense, but it is enough to sway the team to move on.
His trade value wouldn’t be great, as his contract length and lack of play this season will keep his value down. That said, the Steelers would absorb a good chunk of his contract, making him a cheap veteran a team could add to bolster their line. The team would be looking at no better than a sixth or seventh-round pick in 2022 but getting something would be better than getting nothing.
