5 potential replacements for Steelers OT Chukwuma Okorafor
By Tommy Jaggi
Germaine Ifedi, Bears
To be honest, I would prefer if the Steelers did not go this route when searching for their next right tackle. Germaine Ifedi wasn’t very good early in his NFL career but has now strung together two respectable (yet unspectacular) seasons for the Bears.
While this is a quick fix at a discounted price, I can’t guarantee that Ifedi would even be an upgrade over Okorafor for the Steelers in the future. In fact, Chuks is younger than Ifedi and still has more room to grow.
Regardless of Okorafor’s mediocre season, there are teams out there every year that are willing to overpay for offensive tackles with starting experience. The Browns, for instance, gave former Steelers OT Chris Hubbard a five-year, $36.5 million contract back in 2018.
If the Steelers are desperate for a player with experience at right tackle who could come in right away and start, Germaine Ifedi could be a stop-gap option. There are better players out there, but it’s all a matter of how Pittsburgh will choose to prioritize their money and resources in the offseason. I can see this as a possibility.
