Brandon Staley and the Los Angeles Chargers worked diligently to earn the right to be AFC West contenders. Efforts from Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen kept defenses on their toes throughout the season. When opposing defenses zeroed in on Allen’s playmaking abilities,  other receivers on the Los Angeles’ depth chart were forced to step in and make plays. As the season progressed, Mike Williams became someone offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi could rely on.

Catching deep passes has helped Williams gain a reputation in the league. According to ESPN.com, Williams averaged fifteen yards per reception last season. His efforts in Los Angeles ’ passing attack helped the Chiefs improve their areal attack. Scoring on some of the league’s best corners is also one of Williams’ skillsets. Clemson’s former standout finished the 2021-2022 season with nine touchdowns, four more than his total from the year prior.

The addition of a receiver like Mike Williams will help Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool develop more as young receivers. His big-play ability will cause the defense to focus on defending the deep ball. While defensive backs prepare for Pittsburgh’s air raid, Claypool, and Johnson will find room on underneath routes. If the Steelers want to expand their offensive scheme, Mike Williams might be the receiver target.

Watching old highlights of Ben Roethlisberger’s career has put a damper on the mood of the off-season. Finding a replacement quarterback will be a tougher task than many think. Adding experienced receivers to the depth chart will benefit the Steelers in more ways than one.

Wisdom, experience, and accountability are attributes veteran players can pass along to teammates who are ready to take their careers to new heights. If the Steelers decide to bring in a young quarterback, a free agent will improve the team’s chances for next season.
