Pros and Cons of the Steelers trading for Jimmy Garoppolo
The Steelers, with the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, have a decision to make. Draft a quarterback, sign a free agent, or start Mason Rudolph.
The whole situation is quite contentious. One certainty is that no one will agree on how to address the quarterback issue. Fans and analysts will have varying opinions. Some would rather see the Steelers trade or sign a free agent since they are not thrilled with the quarterback draft class and believe the Steelers would be better off addressing the offensive line or cornerback position with the number one selection in 2022. It’s a fair point. Even Mel Kiper Jr. rates all of the quarterbacks in 2022 behind the 2021 draft class.
Others feel the Steelers should shoot for Kenny Pickett or at least opt for Sam Howell. We may have to wait until April to see how that situation unfolds. Then again, others would prefer the Steelers to go with a free agent or trade.
There are options in which they could do so, with the most likely being Jamieson Winston, Teddy Bridgewater, Tyrod Taylor, Jacoby Brisset, Mitch Trubisky, or Josh Rosen. Granted, none of those are super appealing and some might come with a hefty price tag as well.
Of course, there is always a trade; the three most likely options would be Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or Jimmy Garoppolo. In order to retain Rodgers or Wilson, the Steelers would have to give up a lot or a lot of future draft capital. It seems unlikely that the Steelers pursue that option. On the other hand, perhaps a Jimmy Garoppolo trade could work out and benefits the Steelers.
