Pros and Cons of the Steelers trading for Jimmy Garoppolo
Why Trade for Garoppolo?
First, it is important to understand that this is not necessarily the best deal for the Steelers to make, yet there are still a few upsides that make this trade at least worthy of consideration.
Now that said here are the potential benefits. Jimmy is a middle-of-the-road quarterback, and certainly, the Steelers can obtain him for much less than they could Wilson or Rodgers. Also, keep in mind going after Bridgewater would cost the Steelers as he will seek upwards of $20-25 million a season. The Steelers will never pay that.
The upshot here is that Jimmy is expendable. The 49ers have Trey Lance, and everyone in San Francisco wants him to start next year, as that was the intent with drafting him. So the 49ers can not demand what Seattle would for Wilson.
Secondly, trading for Jimmy buys the Steelers some time to rebuild the team and prepare for life after Big Ben. He may not bring the Steelers a Superbowl, but they could stay competitive, have a winning season with him, and keep Tomlin’s winning season streak alive.
He may not be the greatest option out there; however, he has run the Patriot offense in Brady’s absence and has taken the 49ers to the playoffs. The 49ers may have had a decent team, built around Jimmy, but the Steelers could have beaten them. Hey, the Steelers beat the Bills and the Titans; beating the 49ers would not have been impossible.
