Steelers trade back, draft Sam Howell and pick up second-round pick

Scenario number two would be my personal favorite. There are sure to be a few quarterbacks selected ahead of the Steelers, but I would be a little surprised if Sam Howell was one of them. Despite his outstanding three-year production at North Carolina and the fact that he was a high recruit coming out of high school, NFL Draft analysts seem to be pretty low on him.

Howell isn’t ready to start right away in the NFL. He was sacked at an incredibly high rate last season, and he needs to do a better job of maneuvering around the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield instead of just tucking the football and taking off to run. Still, there are a ton of exceptional traits to work with here.

As of now, it seems like a possibility that Howell could fall to the second round. If this proves to be the case, the Steelers could trade back to the tail end of the first to select Howell while picking up a second-round pick in the process.

Adding terrific draft capital like this could give Pittsburgh an instant starter at a different position to make up for Howell sitting on the bench as a rookie. In the long run, this could be the best NFL Draft scenario for the Steelers.
