Steelers Draft scenario 3:

Draft QB at pick 20, go OL and DL in rounds 1 and 2

Let’s say that the Steelers aren’t aggressive enough to get their top quarterback or perhaps he goes earlier than they could have anticipated. Heck, maybe they just couldn’t find the right trade partner to move up for him. Whichever is the case, I can certainly see a scenario where the Steelers stand pat to take their passer at pick 20.

Assuming this happens, there are probably already going to be 2-3 quarterbacks off the board, and most would assume that two of those players will be Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett. There was a rumor during the 2021 season that the Steelers would prefer Sam Howell over Pickett because of his superior tools, and Howell is a guy they met with at the Senior Bowl this year.

If the Steelers go with someone like Howell in round one, they could follow up this selection with back-to-back picks on the offensive and defensive trenches. Maybe they could go something like Kentucky’s OG/T Darian Kinnard in the second round and beef up the defensive line with someone like Tennesee’s Matthew Butler in round three.

Either way, I believe that the Steelers will make it a point of emphasis to improve their trenches on both sides of the ball this offseason.

After the free agency period, we will have a much clearer understanding of how Pittsburgh intends to use its draft capital this year. As of now, these are three realistic plans of attack I can see playing out for the Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft.
