Najee Harris had a tremendous rookie season, but the Steelers lack depth behind him and should scour free agency for some depth at the position.

While there has been debate as to whether or not Najee Harris was the correct first-round selection for the Steelers last year, it is undeniable how integral he has become to this team’s offense. Harris led the NFL in touches last year as a rookie, and with no legitimate backup behind him currently, there is no reason to believe he shouldn’t be among the league leaders again next season.

While Harris is a big, bruising running back, it became apparent last season when he would come out of the game, that the team was incapable of running the ball, with the combination of Benny Snell and Kalen Ballage. The Steelers must add depth to the position this offseason, in order to keep Harris fresh and ensure they have someone capable to turn to if Harris gets hurt, and there are plenty of free agents available.

Najee Harris is a bruising back who will initiate punishment on defenders and wear them down as the game goes along. It is for that reason that the free agent the Steelers sign to add to the running back room should be speedy and athletic, as it would serve as a perfect compliment to Harris. The perfect compliment that resides on the free-agent market is Jerick McKinnon.

While McKinnon has never gotten a chance to take on a featured role, he has shown spurts that have shown just how talented he can be. It is that talent that convinced the San Francisco 49ers to sign him to a four-year deal worth $30 million as a free agent. Unfortunately, he was unable to stay healthy during his time in San Francisco, and the contract was a disappointment.

However, in Kansas City down the stretch this season he proved just how lethal he can be as a complementary piece. While all attention was focused on Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, McKinnon saw plenty of open space and became a lethal weapon for Patrick Mahomes in the Postseason. The Steelers saw this first hand as he turned 12 carries into 61 yards and also added six receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown.

McKinnon could be a great fit in Pittsburgh as he won’t be relied upon as a go-to option but rather will see the field in select packages where the team will look to get the ball in his hands in open space as well as to spell Harris. Additionally, if Harris were to go down, McKinnon could handle the load as a rusher and a receiver for a few games. For the right price, McKinnon could be a really valuable addition to Pittsburgh’s offense.
