Another option for the Steelers as a complementary running back is Devonta Freeman, who would be plucked from the rival Baltimore Ravens. Freeman was once viewed as one of the most dynamic running backs in the league as a Falcon, however since 2019 had been seen as mostly a cast-off who was past his prime.

The same remained true this season as he signed with Baltimore early in the season but saw very little playing time. However, when J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards went down Baltimore went to a committee approach, which consisted of several backs including Ty’Son Williams, Le”Veon Bell, Freeman, and Latavius Murray. As the season progressed, Freeman and Murray became the two that stood out above the rest, and Freeman proved to be a useful piece in Baltimore’s offense.

According to Pro Football Reference, Freeman finished the season with 576 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns, while averaging 4.3 yards per carry, and adding in 34 receptions and a receiving touchdown.

Whether or not he can replicate those stats while playing without Lamar Jackson as the primary threat running the ball remains to be seen. However, Freeman proved he still has something left in the tank, and his combination of speed, receiving ability, and the ability to run the football makes him someone who could easily spell Najee Harris, while also being capable of handling the workload if Harris got hurt.
