Steelers must keep Ahkello Witherspoon

Of all the players who could depart from the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency this offseason, Ahkello Witherspoon is the one guy I want to have back the most. Though he has really only played roughly half a season for the Steelers so far, he was remarkable down the stretch — grading out as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

It’s not hard to see why. Once Witherspoon was acclimated to the defense, he became a consistent lock-down corner (and one who could take the ball away when targeted).

The Steelers have problems enough as it is trying to find quality cornerbacks, and now that they have one, I would hate to let him slip through their grasp. You just don’t see cornerbacks every day who are 6’3” with 33” arms and run 4.45 who are also very good football players.

Witherspoon now has two consecutive years of great play dating back to his time with the 49ers, and I see no reason why the Steelers would not want him back. There could be teams in a bidding war for Witherspoon, but let’s hope Pittsburgh comes away with the best offer. Witherspoon would be by far the most valuable cornerback on this current roster in 2022.
