Steelers can finally run Matt Canada’s offense

Fans were really quick to grab their torches and pitchforks in an effort to run Matt Canada out of town after just one season as the team’s offensive coordinator. However, it’s important to remember that Ben Roethlisberger played a big role in determining the offensive play-calling last season.

I genuinely believe that if the decision was up to Canada, he would have liked to have moved on from Roethlisberger prior to the 2021 season. However, that decision obviously wasn’t up to him. Big Ben was very vocal about not wanting to run a lot of play-action or pre-snap motion late in his career, and the script was no doubt altered to a level Ben felt comfortable with.

Now that Mitchell Trubiksy is in Pittsburgh, Canada has a QB that can fit his scheme instead of the other way around. Trubisky is mobile and he will be willing to do whatever is asked of him in Pittsburgh.

With this change, I would expect Canada’s offense to look much more like the ones we saw from him at the collegiate level, with players moving around before the snap in an effort to confuse the defense. Of course, there’s always the chance that Matt Canada just isn’t a very good offensive coordinator, but I’m going to at least give him a season with a QB that will actually run his offense before I judge him too harshly.
