The Pittsburgh Steelers have been very active this offseason, but here are three free-agent signings that I have a hard time getting behind.

For the most part, fans seem to be very pleased with the 2022 offseason so far. Kevin Colbert is making use of the most cap space he has ever had with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has already signed a few big names.

I was personally a huge fan of the James Daniels signing, and I love that the team was able to retain cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon on a two-year deal. Others love the idea of bringing in a high-profile linebacker like Myles Jack.

Still, there are a few decisions that I’m really not a fan of at the moment. Here are three free-agent signings that don’t make a lot of sense:

Steelers OG/C Mason Cole

I’ll be honest, I was scratching my head after this one. Early in the process, the Steelers had a ton of spending money, and what do they do? They sign a guy that most fans probably haven’t heard of in Mason Cole.

The former Vikings offensive lineman has been rather unspectacular during his first four seasons in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. Upon further evaluation of his tape, I would agree. Cole doesn’t have great traits or flawless technique, and while he has improved over the years as a run-blocker, his pass-blocking is a mess.

Fortunately, this move was salvaged by a terrific James Daniels signing, but Cole just has the feel of a backup player to me at starter cost (2-year, $14 million contract). Cole is probably best suited as a swing interior offensive lineman (much like B.J. Finney was). I think the money used on Cole should have been put towards a better offensive lineman with far fewer question marks in his game.
