3 Steelers players who will benefit most from rebuilt offensive line
By Shayne Kubas
New Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky has had an up and down career since being selected 2nd overall by the Chicago Bears in 2017. After a rough rookie season, he improved tremendously in 2018 with new coach Matt Nagy calling the offense. The Bears finished 12-4 and Trubisky was selected to the pro bowl as an alternate, the first Bears QB to make the game since Jim McMahon in 1985. Things went south from there though between himself and the team, eventually being benched for part of his last season in Chicago.
He spent last season backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo, earning rave reviews from their staff. That and a weak crop of passers in this year’s draft helped propel him back into starting consideration, and the Steelers pounced on him early on day one of free agency.
Luckily for him, the Steelers knew the signing wouldn’t matter if he was running for his life. He will be tasked with learning a new offense and have the pressure of replacing Ben Roethlisberger. That is why he will benefit from the rebuilt line as much as anyone.
His mobility will help keep him out of trouble as well, but being able to trust his pocket and play from within it will be huge for his development. He is still likely to be just a bridge QB over the next two years, but the Steelers can stay competitive if the line can keep him upright. If they are lucky, he could even have a Ryan Tannehill-Esque career revival.
