As you may know, after Roethlisberger’s retirement Kevin Colbert will also retire as the Steelers General Manager after the 2022 draft.

Until then, he has a little over a month left, meaning his decisions will have an enormous impact on what happens to the Steelers organization after he leaves. Plus, one can argue that Colbert might consider his free agency decisions and 2022 draft his legacy with the Steelers.

It’s not like he needs to do anything spectacular. He has been the Steelers general Manager since 2010. As his tenure as GM since 2010, he has acquired Maurkice Pouncey, Antonio Brown, Cam Heyward, David Decastro, Le’Veon Bell, Ryan Shazier, T.J. Watt, Diontae Johnson, and Najee Harris, to name a few.

However, that said, with Colbert’s final draft, the Steelers are at a crossroads. They had many gaping holes in several key positions. In what seems a slightly peculiar move, the Steelers quickly plugged many of these holes by signing several free agents.

They brought in Mitchell Trubisky with their first signing. They then added depth to the offensive line bringing in Mason Cole and James Daniels. They cut Joe Shobert to bring in Myles Jack. They managed to add to the secondary with Levi Wallace and Miles Killebrew. Then they re-signed Chukwuma Okorafor, Arthur Mulet, and Ahkello Witherspoon.

While it’s not unusual for the Steelers to make moves in free agency, they tend to be slow and deliberate in these moves. In this case, they have nine transactions in a little over three days. In some ways, it feels like Colbert is prepping fans for at least one more twist in the offseason.
