Why Willis makes sense for the Steelers

Yes, many of you abhor the thought of the Steelers taking a quarterback in 2022. Some of you May want Pickett, Corral, or think Willis makes poor decisions on throwing the ball or can not read a defense. Some of you may be content with the new guy Mitchell Trubisky and think the Steelers should draft another position. While your thoughts may be valid, it’s not like Kevin Colbert will call you and ask your opinion on the matter.

Since his senior bowl performance, many NFL teams have taken an interest in Willis, not just the Steelers. However, despite the interest in Willis, Zierlein does seem to think the Steelers are the leading contender to land the Liberty Quarterback. Now that free agency has started many of the teams in the hunt for a quarterback are no longer in the hunt like Washington, Denver, Green Bay, Tampa Bay with the return of Tom Brady.

Plus the quarterback carousel has not finished Baker Mayfield may need a new home and Deshaun Watson will change teams. However, prior to free agency, Zierlein believed the Steelers had a 20% chance of landing Willis. With all of the moves so far, that has not changed much. His rationale is the following.

"Kevin Colbert is set for his final draft as the Pittsburgh Steelers general manager, and in a way he’s never been more free to step up to the plate and swing for the fences. Ozzie Newsome did that in his final draft as GM of the Ravens (in 2018), selecting a quarterback in Lamar Jackson with rare run/pass talent who needed additional time for development…but Colbert could see Willis as a talent-rich, dual-threat player capable of making explosive plays and becoming the future face of the franchise."
