Steelers mock draft round 3: OT Abraham Lucas

This pick would be a little bit out of the norm for the Steelers, as Abraham Lucas (a Pac-12 player) isn’t in their preferred scouting range. However, I wouldn’t exclude him as a possibility if he’s on the board in the third round.

While many fans were banging the drum for Pittsburgh to pay big for an offensive tackle like Terron Armstead in free agency this offseason, the Steelers did nothing more than retain underwhelming OT Chukwuma Okorafor. In addition, they also parted ways with Zach Banner in an effort to save money.

The Steelers top three offensive tackles are Okorafor, Dan Moore, and Joe Haeg — none of which have proven to be spectacular options. Though Okorafor signed an extension with the team this offseason, his contract is structured in a way that essentially makes him a one-year rental with a way to get out after the 2022 season.

Much like developmental prospect, Dan Moore, Lucas is a long, athletic tackle with terrific upside, but needs some refinement. Pittsburgh could redshirt him next year and move forward with Moore and Lucas as a pair of young offensive tackles that fit their scheme very well.
