The Pittsburgh Steelers are focused on improving from last season. Will Mike Tomlin and his crew trust Mitch Trubisky to take over where Ben Roethlisberger left off?

Finding players with confidence and elite skill can be difficult for NFL owners. Replacing a future Hall of Fame quarterback is even more of a vigorous task. Mike Tomlin and the Steelers have been working on ways to fill the void at their quarterback position since Ben Roethlisberger announced his retirement. Roethlisberger’s determination, intelligence, and playmaking skills have helped him achieve greatness while wearing black and gold. His two Super Bowl wins are big shoes to fill for any incoming gunslinger.

Veteran quarterbacks were sold at a premium during the first few months of the offseason. Russell Wilson, Carson Went, Marcus Mariota, and Matt Ryan found themselves new franchises to call home. While the Commanders, Broncos, and Falcons pursued their interest in the quarterback market early, the Steelers were accessing their team. Their holes at other positions left analysts and fans to believe their next quarterback would come in the upcoming draft.

After months of deliberation, the Steelers made their first move to build their quarterback depth. Their decision to sign the Chicago Bears’ former first-round pick Mitch Trubisky surprised the football community. In an off-season where quarterbacks were available, why settle for Mitch? Trubisky agreed to a two-year deal that starts at $14.25 million.

Uncertainty still looms over the Steelers quarterback dilemma. Ben Roethlisberger made mistakes at times but his play under center was more desirable than Trubisky’s recent showings. According to ESPN.com, the former UNC Tarheel has thrown for less than three thousand yards in the last two seasons. Fans hope to see glimpses of an improved version of Mitch’s 2018 season. His 3,224 passing yards and twenty-four touchdowns earned him his first pro bowl selection.

Steelers need a reliable QB option

Accolades from previous years will not promise success for the upcoming season. Winning has always been a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers tradition and the franchise does not intend on changing that soon. To think the Steelers will have doubled down on making Trubisky their starting quarterback is a bit outlandish. It has been two years since any coach has seen Trubisky compete for an entire season. In 2021, Turbisky spent his time developing behind Buffalo’s Josh Allen.

The rebuilding process in Pittsburgh differs from other teams in the NFL. The addition of Najee Harris in last year’s draft has given the Steelers leverage in shopping for a new quarterback. Mike Tomlin and Matt Canada expect their gunslingers to be a field general, managing the game to limit risk. With the help of a strong rushing game, the Steelers hope to teach their new quarterback patience, even if he’s found in the draft.

Drafting a quarterback is not out of the question for the Steelers organization. Pittsburgh holds the 20th pick in the first round on April 28th and intend on using it wisely. If the right quarterback is available when it comes time to select their pick, the Steelers could be ready to strike. Prospects like Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett are two young talents the team could target.
