Steelers must improve offensive tackle
Just because the Steelers locked up Chukwuma Okorafor to an extension this offseason doesn’t mean that he should be viewed as the long-term option at offensive tackle for the Steelers. In today’s NFL, OT is one of the most important positions in football, and Pittsburgh shouldn’t settle for below-average starters.
Unfortunately, the offensive tackles in free agency really dried up after Terron Armstead was signed by the Dolphins. Because of this, the Steelers should be looking to dip their feet in the offensive tackle pool when the value is right in the NFL Draft.
Dan Moore Jr. struggled at left tackle during his rookie season, but at least shows some level of promise. Still, both he and Okorafor would probably be best as swing tackles. There are some quality developmental prospects on day two and even early day three this year with good upside.
The Steelers can get out of Okorafor’s deal in 2023 if a better option comes along, and this is a position Pittsburgh should be looking to upgrade if given the chance.
The Steelers don’t have anything close to a perfect roster at the moment, but filling a few more holes prior to the 2022 NFL Draft could give them the flexibility they need when they are on the clock this April.
