Steelers first 3 draft picks based on Gil Brandt’s hot 100
By Andrew Falce
Steelers round 2
Following Brandt’s ranking to the spot, the Steelers would be picking Nebraska center Cam Jurgens in the second round. I’ll be transparent here, I haven’t watched a single second of Nebraska film, and the odds of the Steelers taking a center this early seems unlikely given the slew of other needs on this team.
What I would circle is the receiver position, as there are quite a few logical options that would make a lot of sense. In order, Brandt has ranked Alec Pierce, Danny Gray, Christian Watson, George Pickens, and Skyy Moore all between picks 61-67. The Steelers have expressed interest in all of these receivers to some extent, thus a likely second-round pick would come from this group.
Other notable names include Troy Anderson and Leo Chenal. Both linebackers are athletic freaks who excel at different things. Chenal is a classic run stuffer and blitzer through the gaps. He struggles in coverage though. Anderson is a jack-of-all-trades type of linebacker that lacks a defining trait in his game.
The notable names that the Steelers just missed out on are Chad Muma and Daniel Faalele. Both could potentially fill needs on the team and Faalele had some interest from the team at his pro day. Another important note is that there aren’t a lot of top defensive backs in this area according to Brandt. That would make a pick like Hill in the first that much more valuable.
All of this said, while taking a center here seems unlikely, drafting one of those receivers would make the most sense. Those names are literally a who’s-who of the Steelers pre-draft interest at receiver. Beyond that, there could be some intriguing linebacker names to target in the second round.
