Twitter users furious about how the news was handled

Lamar Jackson’s criticism of Schefter’s reporting stems from the fact that yes, Haskins may have had some difficulties during his tenure in the NFL, such as a strip club controversy and the release of his text messages.

There was another side to Haskins. He was also a survivor of domestic abuse. So he may have had problems, yet the Steelers believed in his talent to the point he had the chance to compete for the starting quarterback position to replace Ben Roethlisberger.

Dez Bryant followed suit posting his thoughts on what Schefter and Gil Brandt said; he was not too happy about the comments made by both men. In short, Bryant said:

"Gil Brandt said Haskins was living to die and Schefter went into talking about his struggles after death. Athlete we have to speak up or remain in the cycle!"

In Schefter’s situation, despite deleting his tweet, he did not post any apology for the comments. However, he did go on to rewrite the tweet and, after the deletion, posted a new tweet. The re-post then drew criticism from Andrew Jerrell Jones:

No doubt that Schefter’s initial attempt at reporting the story around Haskins went horribly wrong. Should Schefter probably have issued some apology with the re-tweet? Of course, he should have. Now to turn this into a matter of race is a little bit of a stretch. There is no indication that Schefter had any racial overtones.

While you can make your own conclusions on the issue of race, his reporting, while not inaccurate, obviously was a poor choice of words, especially for someone in Schefters position who should have known better.

Is it possible Haskins made a bad decision Saturday morning when it is all said and done? Perhaps, however, the incident is still under investigation. Lt. Indiana Miranda, a Florida highway patrol spokesperson, told Fox News “This is an open traffic homicide investigation. No further information will be released until the investigation has been closed.”

So there may be details released that might present a clearer picture of events that led to Haskins death, and perhaps questions might arise over his actions at the time. There will be a time and a place to discuss those details. However, highlighting how past problems might have caused the tragedy at a time when Haskins’s family is hurting and in pain is not the appropriate time to question Haskins’s judgment, especially since authorities have not fully released all the details.

Perhaps the media should have used the tragedy to remind us of the frailty of life and how quickly it might end for anyone, as no one is exempt. Then we would not have needed to discuss the moronic actions of some in the media.
