Steelers mock draft: New weapons and completing the defense
By Shayne Kubas
Round 3, pick 84: Steelers select Nick Cross
The Steelers have gone to the Maryland well several times over the past couple of drafts, and Nick Cross should be the next player they have their eye on. He is a 212-pound heat-seeking missile of a safety that loves to impose his will on ball carriers.
The speed he showed at the combine (4.34 40) shows up on film when he is chasing down and punishing running backs and receivers. His best fit would be as a downhill, attacking safety who can man up tight ends.
His lateral movement leaves a lot to be desired, making him a better fit as a traditional strong safety. He would be a great replacement for Terrell Edmunds if he doesn’t return, and even if he does he would be a valuable piece in run defense as a third safety.
The biggest concern with him is whether he will ever be more than just a box safety. He has the speed to cover deep but he struggles to turn and run due to stiffness in his hips. Edmunds improved his coverage ability and it made him a much more complete player, but Cross may not have that same progression.
Overall, Cross could slide into the role Edmunds filled early in his career and allow Minkah to play deep more often. With time, he could become a designated tight end eraser and a great run defender.
