Steelers mock draft: New weapons and completing the defense
By Shayne Kubas
Round 7, pick 241: Steelers select Connor Heyward
I don’t think I need to explain why the Steelers could select Connor Heyward out of Michigan State. Not only is he a very unique and interesting prospect, but the Steelers will have all the info about him they could ever want courtesy of his brother.
Steelers stalwart Cam Heyward is of course the brother in question, and I could see the Steelers wanting to do what they did for TJ Watt by adding his brother to the roster. Heyward is more likely to be an undrafted pickup but if Pittsburgh wants him bad enough, using their final pick in the draft could be a possibility.
Heyward is listed as a tight end in the draft, but his role in the NFL is likely as a fullback/H-back due to his size (5’11”, 233 pounds). He has great hands, good short-area burst, and has experience at running back and on special teams during his time in East Lansing. He can block well when on the move but lacks the strength to move the pile in the run game.
Heywards’ best chance to make the roster would be to make Derek Watt expendable, but Watt’s special team’s ability will be hard to beat. Heyward does have more potential to be a factor on the offense, but Matt Canada rarely used a fullback last season. That may be something he wants to do more but that remains to be seen.
If the Steelers want to remain competitive in the AFC this season, this draft would give them some early impact players without sacrificing future potential. It also will allow both Mitch Trubisky and Matt Canada a real opportunity to prove they belong. If not, you have a great core of weapons for the next QB and offensive coordinator to inherit. Combined with some high upside defenders, I believe the Steelers would be very happy with this haul. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!
