Miles Killebrew/ Karl Joseph, Strong Safety
Let me preface this by saying, both of these players are very nice to have on the roster for the Steelers, but neither should be a starter. Starting off with Miles Killebrew, the Steelers have one of the best special teamers in the league with him as he blocked two punts last year, and has established himself as an integral piece on that special team’s unit in Pittsburgh.
Additionally, he adds some solid depth as he can play sparingly on defense and in some packages, but the team should not have a situation where he may be a regular on the defensive side of the ball.
As for Karl Joseph, while he is a former first-round pick who has plenty of starting experience, he also should not be relied upon as a starter. Rather he is a nice fallback option for the team in case they don’t improve on the position, he still does have first-round pedigree but hasn’t quite lived up to that billing yet as a professional.
Luckily for the Steelers, they still have options at the position, as Terrell Edmunds remains a free agent, and he has experience in the Steelers secondary. Damontae Kazee, Landon Collins, and Tyrann Mathieu also still are available, so the team has some options on the free-agent front.
Edmunds makes the most sense for the team when you combine age, price, and familiarity with the defense. It seems mutually beneficial for both sides to make a deal happen, and hopefully, they can make it happen before the draft.
However, if they don’t sign a free agent at safety, the draft has plenty of options too. The team could look into players such as Daxton Hill, Lewis Cine, and Jaquan Brisker. Each could be a good fit with the team, particularly the latter two who could potentially make it to the team in round two.
