Steelers mock draft round 6 (via Chiefs): OT Max Mitchell

In the sixth round, I have the Steelers going back Lousina-Lafeyette for the second time in the last three years to select offensive tackle Max Mitchell. Mitchell held his own with some impressive reps at the Senior Bowl this year and was part of a 13-1 football program this past season.

I contemplated edge defender Jeffrey Gunter with this pick, but I settled with Mitchell — who is great value at this point in the draft. Mitchell doesn’t have elite athletic traits, but he possesses quality size (6’6 1/4”, 307 lbs) and threshold length (33 1/2” arms).

Mithcell also managed to string together three consecutive impressive seasons of college tape. In 2021, he earned a 94.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus — second-best in the nation only to Trevor Penning this year.

Mitchell also offers quality depth at offensive tackle. Dan Moore Jr. and Chukwuma Okorafor are penciled in as the starters in 2021, but the team recently released Zach Banner and Joe Haeg remains the only viable backup. Mitchell would begin his career at OT4 and have a chance to develop into Pittsburgh’s swing tackle.
