Steelers RB Anthony McFarland

I’m not ashamed to admit that I had pretty high hopes for Anthony McFarland after he was drafted by the Steelers in 2020. McFarland was a very young running back who had some remarkable games at Maryland and routinely showed off his 4.4 speed.

Sadly, this signing hasn’t been at all what the Steelers have planned. Though his opportunities have been spare, McFarland looks lost at times when he does touch the ball and there have been a few gaping holes he missed that could have gone for sizeable gains.

There were some smaller scat-backs in the 2022 draft that could have potentially replaced McFarland’s role on the team, but fortunately for him, the Steelers elected to go elsewhere with their selections.

McFarland potentially be in even greater danger still of losing his job than a player like Snell, because a UDFA like Mataeo Durant is a very similar player. Still, McFarland and Snell will be high-fiving when they catch up at OTA’s, believing that their jobs might be secure for one more year.

The Steelers could have very easily addressed any of these positions in the NFL Draft, but they did not. Hopefully, these five young players don’t take their opportunities for granted this summer.
