Steelers 2022 undrafted free agents: Who will stay and who will go?
Steelers OL Jordan Tucker
North Carolina, 6’-6”, 340 lbs.
Tucker started at right tackle in all 13 games in 2021, though in the games I watched he was off the field for a number of snaps. He played in 45 career games for the Tar Heels. He is clearly not the most athletic player and would benefit from a move to offensive guard.
If he gets his hands on an opponent early he can control the rep. If they get a good punch on him and force him to work in space things get dicey. He’s not fast analyzing the pass rush and can take on the wrong assignment in stunts allowing a pass rusher to go undefended. His mirroring is okay but his kick slide is labored. He can be beaten by speed rushers.
He’s not the smoothest-looking move blocker but he can do it. He was called on to pull to the far side of the line and had a couple of good second-level blocks in the games I watched. However, while on the move in one of the games I watched he had a number of whiffs, missing his assignment entirely. His field awareness is also bad.
Tucker has a tendency to chase blocks rather than staying close to the runner or QB he’s supposed to be blocking for. He needs to learn to wait for the block to come to him. He does show some potential as a power blocker in tight quarters. His Pro Football Focus grade is average, across the board. Overall Grade: 72.4, Pass Block Grade: 75.5, and Run Block Grade: 70.6
Tucker is limited as an offensive tackle but might become an average reserve right guard with some development. Working for him is the Steelers lousy offensive line. His lack of versatility is working against him but if the Steelers think he can succeed at guard I could see him making the practice squad.
Chances of sticking: Tucker has an average chance of making the practice squad.
