Steelers RB Anthony McFarland

At this point, I believe it’s safe to say Anthony McFarland‘s roster spot is far from secure this season. McFarland, a Steelers selection in the fourth-round selection in the 2020 NFL draft, has been far from promising.

In his first two seasons in the black and gold, McFarland has a total of 116 rushing yards and 65 receiving yards. That’s only good for an average of 58 yards rushing and 32 yards receiving a season, hardly making McFarland a factor in this Steelers offense.

Aside from the lack of production, McFarland will also be fighting for his job with multiple other RBs. Trey Edmunds is one of those running backs. Edmunds has been around the Steelers organization since 2018. Even though Trey hasn’t been amazing in the backfield either, he does have a role on special teams.

The other running back looking to make the roster is Duke UDFA RB Mateo Durant. Durant went undrafted in this past draft, despite multiple analysts projecting him to go as early as the 5th round. Durant isn’t just a camp body. The Steelers signed him to the highest paying contract ever for a UDFA running back.

McFarland’s lack of production and the competition around him certainly has him on “thin ice”.
